Teaching Children to Follow God

Deuteronomy 6:4-9

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them to your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

In order to teach our children about God we must first make God our life. Following God is apart of our entire life not just going to church or helping people. We must make God the Lord of our lives.

Proverbs 13:24

He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him.

Proverbs 22:6

Train up a child the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

Ephesians 6:4

Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

Discipline is what children need. We are to teach our children the ways of Our Lord, and when we do so they will grow up to love and respect God. We are to encourage our children to be good and obey God. When they disobey, we are to discipline but this does not mean to beat or demean our children. It means to lovingly discipline and to always let our children know that we love them and the reason we discipline is so that they learn right from wrong.
