In today's world it is shocking to listen to some kids. They easily say words that we got the old soap in the mouth routine for. And what do their parents say? Oh, they're just being kids, leave them alone.
Did you know that even if you have a clean mouth that you might be using profanity? Yea, go ahead, read that again. Every time you say, lord, gosh, geesh, darn, dang, and others it is profanity because you are substituting 'okay' words for 'bad' words.
Exodus 20:7
You shall not misuse the name of the LORD Your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
Does this mean everytime you say Lord, you are miss-using the LORD's name? If it is not in praise and honor of our LORD, yes. We are to honor the name of the LORD not use it as if it was nothing special. The LORD's name is to be held in the utmost respect. And the way we use the LORD's name shows how we truly feel about Him.
So now you are wondering about all those other words huh? Well, it is profane. When you use shoot, or dang or any other word in place of a curse word it is still profane. Any word depending on it's usage can be profanity.
So where do kids pick this up? Well, the biggest contributor to any habits a child picks up is from their parents. The people that are in their lives the most. Children watch and learn from their parents. All behaviors not just language.
I don't curse or use profanity, how can my kids pick that up? Let me ask this. You are on your way to an important meeting and your child is in the car with you. You are driving as fast as you can or should and all of a sudden traffic comes to a stand still. What do you say or do? That is how children learn.
My mom had a revelation on her mouth when I was about 12. Used to as she was driving if a car cut her off, or did some crazy stunt she called him a jerk. Well, one day a car did this and at the same time we both said JERK!! Let me tell ya, she has to my knowledge said it since. See, saying jerk or idiot or anything else right there is just as bad as calling him any of those curse words that you can think of.
So what is my answer to solve this, stay in prayer. Stay in the Word, grow close to the Lord.
