Top : Holidays : St Patricks Day : Using the Shamrock to teach the Trinity Using the Shamrock to teach the Trinity~ Faith JohnsonIt wasn't too long ago that we were sitting in church and one of our blessings looked at me and asked "How could Jesus be God is God is the Father?" That question made me realize a couple of things. The first being that I didn't know how to explain it. I just accepted without question that the Godhead was equal in different manifestations. (yeah... don't say that to your children they will look at you like you grew a second head or something) But I don't know that I was every taught the Trinity. The second thing I realized was that in doing research on St. Patrick's Day along time ago and found something about St. Patrick using the Shamrock explaining the Trinity. (In Germany the upside down Christmas tree was used also) So... I decided to look into the Shamrock. Why not.. it's March. According to legend, St. Patrick used the shamrocks in the fields of Ireland to explain the Trinity to the Irish. Historically the Irish have a strong background in paganism and druidism where the belief is in many gods. When explain the Biblical Trinity his example of a shamrock was what it took to explain there is only One God. When you look at the Shamrock there is the stem and then three leaves. God is the stem and then on each of the leaves is the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. "Even the plants of the field tell about God. The shamrock has three leaves but only one stem. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are not three gods, but One God." ~ St. Patrick Submitted on : 11-Mar-2008 Top : Holidays : St Patricks Day : Using the Shamrock to teach the Trinity |
