Mother's Day

~ Toni Tilley

Mother's Day is a nationally recognized day set aside to honor our mothers and show how much we appreciate them. Our churches are most faithful in carrying out this celebration of mothers. In most churches across the country, on the 2nd Sunday of the month of May there will be a special 'Mother's Day' sermon, extolling the praises of mothers. The preachers will lift up the flag of motherhood and wave the banner of mommy. They might give recognition to the oldest and youngest mothers and the mother with the most children present, etc... They will tell of such good, faithful women. Women who get up early, and start the day praying hard for their families. They work harder all day cleaning, cooking, and nurturing. The working mothers in addition manage to give their best at their jobs. They are the last to retire at night, having helped with homework, played with, bathed, read bedtime stories to, and taught prayers to their children. They have also given their husbands their undivided attention during the remaining hours of the evening. These mothers are sacrificing all for the sake of their families. In the Bible, Exodus 20:12 tells us to honor our mothers. I believe we should honor our mothers and I believe mothers should strive to be 'good' mothers.

For many years I hated to go to church on Mother's Day. I would be sitting in my pew cringing under guilt and condemnation. I was not like the MOTHER being praised. Yes, I loved my children. Yes, I met their needs the best way I could. Yes, I enjoyed playing with them and praying with them. BUT, I didn't pray as often as I thought I should, and I lost my temper more often than I thought I should. I wasn't sacrificing all for my children. I had Hershey Bars hidden in my underwear drawer so I wouldn't have to share them. I made my children do chores, even when I hadn't made my bed. I had to 'hide' in the bathroom after a stressful (Yes, my children drove me crazy sometimes) day soaking in a hot bubble bath with a good book while my hard-working husband had to deal with sibling rivalry after a hard day at work and cutting the grass when he got home.

Getting ready for church on Mother's Day was a prime example.(Do I have to go there???) Hearing about these MOTHERS was really hard. How could I sit there with my Walmart corsage pinned on my shoulder and pretend that I was just like that MOTHER who never had a dirty dish in the sink and hit the floor on her knees at the slightest hint of a problem. How could I relate to the woman who would rather take vacations with her children than spend one night away from them. I couldn't wait to enjoy the 'empty nest syndrome'. Oops, did I say that aloud.

None of my children were accidents, and the last one was an out and out miracle(Praise God). Like I said I love my children. I love each of them dearly. They are my joy and I can't imagine choosing to have a marriage without children. But, I am not perfect and I do not want to be put on a pedestal that I couldn't reach with an extension ladder.

The devil will sit there and browbeat you into thinking that if you are not like those MOTHERS, then you must be a terrible mother. Guess what? He's wrong again. God has created each of us with different personalities , different talents, different desires. He gives us the freedom to choose how we will live our lives. If dust bunnies under the bed don't bother you, leave them alone for awhile. If they do bother you, vacuum them up. If you have to have matching sheets, blankets, and draperies, go for it. If you are happy with clean sheets and an old quilt and mini-blinds, great. Peanut butter has as much protein as a piece of pot roast. Don't let anyone put condemnation on you. If you are not the mother that YOU should be, make sure that you have committed your life to the Lord Jesus Christ. Then confess your sins according to 1 John 19. It is never too late to start on a new path.

We must love our children, we must teach them about the Lord, we must meet their physical needs. We must rely on the Lord to make us who He wants us to be. Enjoy your children while you can, they grow up fast.
