First Week of Advent

~ `

And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. (Luke 1:26-33)

The joy of Christmas! We have just gotten past the busiest weekend of the shopping season and I am sure you have seen some pretty joyous people shopping and all the Christmas Trees and poinsettias, it's overwhelming this time of year.

Now look at this believed to be 14 year old girl that had just recently been betrothed to Joseph, a young man several years older than her. First she experienced the fear of Gabriel appearing before her. Then being comforted by his words, "Greeting, you are highly favored! The Lord is with you." Wow.

I know some teens that are pretty devoted to God and I know they would be blown away if an angel appeared to them like that. The extreme emotion from fear to joy to do what?

Mary was looking forward to her wedding and then is told that she will conceive the Savior of God's people. She was joyed to know the Savior was coming, but I imagine she was terrified of what your betrothed would do and say. 2000 years ago, pregnancy before marriage was punishable by death. But she trusted in the Lord and obeyed.

Prepare yourselves this week by remembering, Jesus is the Reason for The Season. We were sent the Savior so that we could join God in Heaven. What better Christmas gift is there? Because Jesus was born and because he died on the cross and rose again, we have the Hope and the anticipation of His return soon in the future.

Prayer : Dear Lord, open the eyes of your people. Give us the desire to show your love and joy through this Christmas Season. Let your light shine through us, Amen.
