Christmas Quilt

~ `

Gather old blankets scraps of cloth and have a quilting bee, this is a great family project or church project after the quilts are done donate to a homeless shelter or a help center. The quilts don't have to be perfect just warm and cozy.

You can go to your local Walmart or fabric store and get quilt quarters if you want to use new fabric. They also have scarps or remnants available.

The scraps and quilting bee would work best with just a block quilt. Use 3-4 inch squares and use a simple design for a really basic quilt.

You can theme your quilts also. HAve specific colors or a pattern that everybody agrees on. This also is a great idea for making baby quilts for your local children's hospital or woman's crisis pregnancy center.

How to Make a Fast and Easy Baby Quilt

How to make an easy baby quilt you can finish in a day. You'll find it easiest with a rotary cutter, rotary ruler and mat. It is important that all seams are sewn a scant 1/4 inch. Wash and iron all fabrics before cutting. Finished size 42" x 48"

Difficulty Level: easy Time Required: a few hours

    Here's How:
  1. Choose 45" fabrics - 2 fabrics. A: 1-1/4 yd. bright, cheerful baby print. B: 1 yd - solid color or allover almost solid chosen from a contrast color from the A-print fabric. Choose a 45' wide backing fabric, 1-1/2 yds.
  2. Cut 4 strips from the A fabric - each 3.5 inches wide across width of fabric. (3.5" x approx. 42-44") and put aside.
  3. Cut 4 strips from each A and B - all 6.5" by width of fabric (6.5 x approx. 42-44"). Total 8 strips.
  4. From the 4 strips in #3 cut 21 squares each 6.5" x 6.5" of A and B. Total 42 squares.
  5. Sew pairs of one each of square A and square B to each other = 21 pairs. Use a scant 1/4" seam. Press all seams open.
  6. Sew three pairs each into rows totaling six squares each, alternating A and B fabrics. Press all seams open. You'll make a total of 7 rows.
  7. Sew rows together in pairs, alternating squares of A and B to form checkerboard effect. Match and pin seams before sewing. Press seams open after sewing.
  8. Join the 3 pairs of rows and the extra row into 7 rows forming a checkerboard effect in the completed quilt top. Press.
  9. Trim and even the edges of the quilt top. Get the 3.5" strips from #2 above for borders.
  10. Sew the 4 strips into one continuous strip. Press seams open.
  11. With right sides together, sew strips to the top and bottom borders of the quilt top. Trim ends even with sides. Press seams.
  12. In a similar manner, sew strips down both sides of the quilt top. All 4 sides are now bordered. Make the "sandwich" on a table or floor: lay top right side up, then backing right side down, then batting or flannel for filling. Sew around three edges completely and sew around the 4th side leaving about 12 inches open on the 4th side. Turn the quilt inside out and handsew the 12 inch opening shut. Tie with floss or yarn every 6 inches - or machine quilt the finished top. Tips: Flannel would be a soft, cozy fabric to use. Either for just the backing or for all fabrics. You may wish to use 2-3 different fabrics for the B fabric for contrast instead of one.
