Shelter In The Storm

~ Faith Johnson

The family is to be a shelter in the storms. The way this happens is by having God the center of the family. Proverbs 14:26 He who fears the LORD has a secure fortress, and for his children it will be a refuge.

There will be many storms in life and the best thing you can do for your children is show them that with God, all things are possible.

The family is the learning center for life. When our families are strong in the Lord, we can weather the storms that life throws at us.

Psalms 144:12 Then our sons in their youth will be like well-nurtured plants, and our daughters will be like pillars carved to adorn a palace.

Ephesians 6:4 Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

Deuteronomy 6:6-7 These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

Children learn how to handle the storms of life by watching their parents. The most obvious example is relationships. If mom and dad are a loving couple and affectionate and caring, the children see that and see the fruit of the parents relationship. They also see how you handle relationships with other people too. If you are loving and kind in your relationships, the child will see that and try to imitate. If you are bitter and angry, the child will either become the same or fight tooth and nail to not be like that.

Other examples of how Children learn are when you are faced with problems how you react. Do you turn to God and is your prayer life evident? Or do you cower away and cry about how you don't know what you are going to do?

Christians should always turn to God. Regardless if things are happy or sad, easy or hard. Our kids learn from how we handle the trials. So if for no other reason than to set a good example for your children, you have to give things to God and allow Him to work through you.

Even in the most trying of times, family is to be a haven for happiness and play.

Ecclesiastes 9:9 Enjoy life with your wife, whom you love, all the days of this meaningless life that God has given you under the sun-- all your meaningless days. For this is your lot in life and in your toilsome labor under the sun.

Proverbs 5:18 May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth.

Psalms 127:3 Sons are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from him.

The family that prays and plays together, stays together. Pray together every night, do family devotions. As parents, show your children that God is the most important thing in life.
