Are Toxic Household Chemicals Poisoning Your Family?

The EPA reports that toxic chemiclas in our home cleaning and personal care products are 3 times more likely to cause cancer than outside pollutants. They also warn that toxic chemicals in household cleaners cause women working at home to have a 55% higher cancer risk than women working outside the home.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission connects 150 toxic chemicals in our homes to allergies, birth defects, cancer, and psychological abnormalities.

As parents we have to ask ourselves,'How does this affect our children?'.

Physiologically, children are more vulnerable to toxic vapors than adults because of their higher metabolic rates. They require more oxygen, and they breathe in two to three times as much air(and therefore toxins) relative to body size than adults. Children are more physically active. This also increases their breathing rate and intake of toxins. In addition children play closer to the floor where heavier pollutants settle.

It's alarming that indoor air is so full of chemical vapors, because children spend 12 to 20 hours a day in their homes. In one five year study the EPA reported that a number of homes had chemical levels that were seventy times higher inside the homes than outside.

Fortunately, parents can do something to reduce their family's exposure to airborne toxins from household products. They can simply switch brands.

This is a concern that lies close to my heart. Two of our five children are sensitive to chemicals. Our youngest daughter has a bad reaction to Formaldehyde. It has over 30 trade names, and is in every over the counter product I could find. Formaldehyde is also a known carcinogen and unsafe for long term use.

Our second oldest son sufferred for 5 years with migraines. For two years he was taking a blood thinner so that they would be less severe. By simply changing our household products we have been able to take him off of his medication.

There are safer and more effective products to use that don't cost a fortune. I want everyone to know that they too can choose safer alternatives.
