Perseverance

~ Faith Johnson

As I picked up the same toy for what seemed to be the twentieth time in one day and it wasn't even lunch yet, I realized that perseverance is part of being a parent and a housekeeper. See, right now I am trying to work with two of our boys to clean up after themselves. This is not always an easy task, that's for sure. While they have to physically clean up before nap time and then at bedtime, I show them during the day that we 'clean as we go'. This can become quite challenging, as any parent that has attempted to do this can probably relate. That's when I had realized that parenting is another word for perseverance.

Persevering is to continue with something and not give up, such as having children and raising them. Once God gives us our children we have them until the end comes. It doesn't really matter how old our kids are, they are still our kids. We are their parents and we have to persevere through the end to teach our children about God, about responsibility, and about life. In doing so we are “Training up our children in the way they should go.” Proverbs 22:6

Of course things are not always easy, some kids are just plain stubborn while others are so compliant it baffles you. I know in personal experience, 2 of our daughters are very head strong and stubborn, our other daughter mostly wants to please and goes with the flow. With one of the stubborn daughters, she will resort to tantrums and everything else at home and in public. When she does this we can tell right away of those around us who has 'angels' for children and who don't. Typically those that have 'angels' don't know what perseverance is, or not when it comes to parenting.

For those parents that have angelic children that always obey and are more than eager to help out, you are blessed. For those that don't have those rare children that never back talk and will fight tooth and nail to do anything but what you told them to do, remember that the Lord will give you the strength you need, if you ask. (Trust me, I've tried it without asking and I keep coming back to the Lord pleading for strength,)

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13

God will give us the strength we need to persevere as parents, He is willing to give us the strength just as He is willing to give us salvation, we just have to accept it.

Do not worry about anything. But pray and ask God for everything you need. And when you pray always give thanks. And God's peace will keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. The peace that God gives is so great that we can not understand it. Philippians 4:6-7

Along with God's strength, he will give us peace. Which as those wonderful blessings you were given as infants grow closer to adolescence, you need strength and even more perseverance. And in order to do that, we need to persevere in the Lord.

The Lord gives his strength to his people. The Lord blesses his people with peace. Psalms 29:11

In order to raise our children for Christ, and in order to have a Christian home that loves God, we have to persevere in the Lord. Remember Deuteronomy 6: 5-9

Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
