I Ponder When I Wonder

~ Faith Johnson

"Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart." Luke 2:19 (NIV)

My mom and I were talking about this verse yesterday. I was looking for some inspiration for a Mother's Day article. She has been doing the Bible Study Believing God by Beth Moore and "pondering" was one of the topics a week or so ago.

Do you know what it means to ponder?

According to Merriam-Websters? ponder vb 1 : to weigh in the mind 2 : to consider carefully

Now the verse in Luke, where Mary was pondering was not long after Jesus was born and the shepherds came to see. Once they got there they told Mary about the angels and what they had said.

"Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord." Luke 2:11

I think I would have been doing some pondering also. True, Mary knew that Jesus was the result of immaculate conception and she knew that his birth was the plan of God. I just don't think she fully understood what all would entail. Don't forget, Mary was a young teenager at this time she was 14 or 15. But she pondered the things that the shepherds told her and treasured them.

I bring this up because have you watched your little one and see them doing something and think if that will have something to do with their future?

Going back to the conversation I had with my mother, she pointed out that when I was little and even through my early teens, I was always helping with kids. There were several times that I would babysit or even work with kids in church. When I was 12 I would watch the kids during choir practice for the adults. Then when I was 13 & 14 I taught Mission Friends and Sunday School for the 3-4s. My first job was when I was 15 and I worked in a day care, mind you it was before they had all the rules and regulations they have in place now. Then my mom pointed out that I have 6 children that need me. So, she pondered.

As you watch your children age and grow, ponder on the things they do that sticks out. It's usually the things that are not necessarily normal for their age. Or things that people say about the child that seems a bit odd.

Right after my 21 month old was born, several people mentioned that he was a leader. In the nursery at the hospital one of the nurses commented that several of the babies were crying, he sorta grunted and the nursery fell silent. It makes you wonder sometimes just what God has planned for your children.

More importantly though it makes me realize I have to teach the kids God's Word so that they can do what God wants from them when He wants them to do it.
